13th June, 2008 Friday

Today (I always begin by the word "Today") haha..
At school did our very 1st experiment -- Titration.
At ACS 5 years 1st time I enter the chemistry lab. (Bio and Physic lab entered many times before)
1stly Mr.Ong demonstrated the experiment for us, but it keeps failed, i.e. the solution hardly turn pink even it exceed the standard results of the solution.
He tried few times and later found out the acid(Sulphuric Acid) prepared by the lab assistant is too concentrated.
So, he asked us to dilute the acid 1st before doing the titration.
And I dilute lor..and did all the titration(3times) and got my results.
My results was terrible, is far less than the standard range of volume. That's because my acid is too diluted! Swt..
And he said the volume can't be deviates from each other by 0.05 cm3....If not wrong!
lol...I got results all difference more than that 0.1 la..haha...
Never mind, is just a warm up experiment. haha..
After school, went to Christian Union meeting. Sang some songs and played some games. Quite bored.. ><
And then went to Boon Oong's house...Asked him walk with me to delta but don't want...Scare sweat kononnya...haih~ ... So paiseh la at his house...haha
Then went to Bio Tuition. Today fui teng and jacqueline came for the 1st time.
And so tulan when the students arguing some useless question with the teacher..waste my time to learn more things.

What I've learned today is...hmm....
Learned about Biology chapter 1 on Water and Carbohydrate.

Water is a dipolar molecules with uneven charge distribution around the Hydrogen and Oxygen Atom. Hydrogen has a slight positive charge and Oxygen has a slight negative charge. The Hydrogen and Oxygen atom therefore can form Hydrogen bond with each other.
And bla bla bla bla bla bla la...Lazy to talk about water la... You know la water, you drink it everyday one...And 70% of your body is make up of it. So, 7/10 of your body is water and you are a watery body. Look at your body and you will see water and know what is water. (What Am I Crapping About~?) *Ignore that*

Then, carbohydrate. Carbo=carbon and Hydrate=water.
Therefore, Carbohydrate=add water to carbon.
The general formula for carbohydrate is Cx(H2O)y.

Monosaccharides are the simplest form of carbohydrate.
The general formula for monosaccharide is (CH2O)n. where n=3 to 7.
Triose has 3 carbon.
Pentose has 5 carbon
Hexose has 6 carbon.

2 Monosaccharides form a dissacharide through condensation (removal of 1 water molecule)
and dissacharide can be broken down into monosaccharide through hyrolysis (addition of water)

Glucose+Glucose=Maltose (reducing sugar)
Glucose+Galactose=Lactose (reducing sugar)
Glucose+Fructose=Sucrose (non-reducing sugar)

Reducing sugars are sugars that can reduce Cu2+ to Cu in Benedict's Test.

Alpha Glucose has its OH group in carbon-1 opposite the direction of Carbon-6.
Beta Glucose has its OH group in carbon-1 same direction as Carbon-6.

Also learned the ring structure of glucose.

All these are roughly what I've learned today, some of them learned before during form 4 or form 5 and some are new.
